DOLPHINS SUCCESS AT THE YORKSHIRES
Pocklington Dolphins taste Relay success at Yorkshire Swimming Championships
Pocklington Dolphins tasted unprecedented success in the 2016 Yorkshire Swimming Championships. A total of 5 teams and numerous individuals have competed over the last few weeks. This has all added up to a record number of dolphins swimming in the Yorkshire championships this year. These results are testament to the hard work and dedication that both the swimmers and coaches have put in this year. Well done to you all.
The championships started off with the longer distances. Helena Walker, Megan & Alistair Jones, Bea and Katrina Stanton all qualified to swim in these events. The next part of the championships was the sprint events. The above swimmers all qualified again for the shorter distances and were joined by Mary Buckle, Claudia Moore, Libby Anderson, Sam Pinder, Michael Bowes, Hannah Stanton, Libby Smales, Ben Pateman and old timer Kev Pickering.
The relay qualifiers started off with the 11/12 year old girls where Yorkshire qualifiers Mary Buckle and Lucy Weld were joined by Cara Durkin and Ruby Remblance. They came 28th and 33rd in their two relays. The 13/14 year old boys followed quickly on with qualifiers Sam Pinder, Ben Pateman and Alistair Jones being joined by Louis Cameron. They came a fantastic 19th and 21st in their two races. The 15/16 year old girls then followed on with qualifiers Hannah Stanton, Megan Jones and Helena Walker being joined by Abbie Pickering resulting in 18th and 21st places for their races. It was then the turn of the open boys, with the oldest team of the day on display Kev Pickering and Michael Bowes were joined by Jim Madeley and Sam Clark to produce a 15th place in the freestyle relay.
By this time the excitement was starting to gain hold as numerous finals were being held over Sunday lunchtime. The 9 and 10 year old girls who had all qualified for individual events arrived during this electric atmosphere. They got straight into the spirit of things with their group huddle and raising of hands in the air to Go Dolphins certainly making some of the other teams notice. Looking at the way they practiced this Claudia Moore, Evie Rennison, Libby Anderson and Bea Stanton will be leading our cheering in future Galas.
In the pool the under 10’s were noticed as well. During one of their heats the announcer was heard to say In first place we have Leeds A , in second Sheffield A and in third place Pocklington Dolphins aren't they doing well. Yes he was right they did well and Qualified for both the Medley and Freestyle finals. They finished 7th and 8th respectively in these finals. On the way to doing this they did the double over teams like Hull, York, Harrogate, Rotherham, Skipton, and Adwick. The only clubs beating them being from City of Sheffield, City of Leeds, Barnsley, Borough of Kirklees in both events and Bradford just in the freestyle. In all ten of the afternoon’s finals the only other relatively small club to have a team qualifying for a final was Harrogate! The girls were delighted to receive their Yorkshire Pendants as finalists.
Well done to all the swimmers and thanks to all the Coaches and parents who enabled all the teams to represent Pocklington Dolphins with such great pride.
